The normal driver license in Germany to drive a car is B. For this license you are eligible to drive cars with

  • up to 3500kg
  • up to 8 seats
  • with trailer (max 750kg)

To get a drivers license in Germany you will need to pass a theoretical and a practical exam.

For preparations you will need to find a school and fulfil the following mandatory practical requirements:

  • 5 x 45 min driving on federal highways or country roads
  • 4 x 45 min driving on motorways
  • 3 x 45 min driving at night or night times
Additionally you will need fulfil theoretical requirements:
  • 12 x 90 min theoretical training
  • 2 x 90 min for additional theoretical topics

If you have a drivers license from a non EU Country, you are still eligible to drive with it six months after you registered a residence in Germany. After that you are not eligible anymore and you will need a drivers license which has been issued in Germany.

If you want to transcript your non EU license into a German one you usually need to pass a practical exam. There is no requirement for a theoretical exam.

If you bought a car for yourself and the seller maybe is a private person and doesn’t do the registration for you, you will have to register it yourself. If you don’t want to pay an agency to do it, you will need to go to the vehicle registration (KFZ Zulassungsbehörde) in the City where you are registered.

Unfortunately some sites are still in German only. So let us know if you need any help with that.
